Idea? now what?

Ohhh I know this feeling….You get an idea and it’s LIBERATING. You can see the whole thing play out in your head and it keeps you up at night. You daydream of its success and all the farm animals you will purchase with said success.

Here’s what I’ve learned: as innovators, we have to say “no” more than most people. Not because the ideas aren’t good, but because we can’t build everything at once.

A patent attorney (RIP…he was a great guy…) once told me something that stuck:

Don’t suppress your ideas. Give them a home.

So here’s what I do.

I keep a beaaauuutiful notebook. I bought the nicest, sleekest one I could find. Thick pages, black linen cover…..ugh…stunning.

When an idea hits, I pour a glass of Sauv Blanc from New Zealand (or kombucha… or sparkling water with a dash of vinegar), set a 30-minute timer, and go HAM. I let myself feel daydream, design, name, pitch…..

Then I close the book.

When I actually have space to build something, I go back and choose one.

Because you don’t want regrets someday.

I consult with innovators almost weekly and I hear it ALLLLLL the time:
“Oh, I thought of that years ago.”

Ideas are everywhere. And I’m sorry but…..if you did not do anything about it, it is irrelevant if you thought of it years ago. It is action (and only action) that matters. And action is rare, which is why I never hesitate to vocalize my ideas in fear of someone stealing them. If someone can execute better than me? Well….good on them!

So honor your ideas.
But when it’s time?

Move.
